Honouring Ancestors

SoundDome acknowledges the inspirational work of two remarkable gentlemen - without who's profound influence, the organisation would probably not exist: Douglas Lilburn, often referred to as the ‘Father of New Zealand Music’ was a pioneer in the field of sound-based composition who dedicated his career to the discovery of a national musical identity. At the age of 80 he was reportedly found ‘in tears playing the recently recorded master takes of Richard Nunns' and Hirini Melbourne's first CD Te Ku te Whe featuring the sounds of Taonga Puoro [traditional Maori instruments]. Lilburn said … “I have been waiting my whole life to hear this” [Nunns 2014] - and John Cousins, a Christchurch-Based Sonic Artist and inspirational teacher, who ‘lit the fire’ in the hearts and minds of a new generation of sound-based composers.
